Vitamin D Should Not Be Obtained Through Sunlight, Group Advises

08 dec 2008--Vitamin D should be obtained through foods, beverages, and supplements — and not through unprotected exposure to sunlight — according to a position statement from the American Academy of Dermatology.

Unprotected exposure should be avoided, the groups says, to help reduce ultraviolet-related cancers.

The academy also advises physicians to actively discuss with patients how to get adequate vitamin D.

The paper includes a table listing the Institute of Medicine's minimum intake levels according to age, sex, and pregnancy and lactation status.
