A review in the current New England Journal of Medicine reminds clinicians that venous thromboembolism in hospitalized patients is common, but preventable.
Roughly a quarter of all cases of venous thromboembolism are associated with hospitalization and half to three-quarters of those cases occur on medical services. Thrombosis was asymptomatic in over 70%, "probably because most patients spent much of the day in bed."
The review lists risk factors and discusses both drug- and nondrug-based approaches to prophylaxis, and makes recommendations consistent with American College of Chest Physician guidelines.
